A Message from a Teacher: The Intense Reality of Korean Education and a Special Opportunity
Hi everyone, it's your K-Unni. Today, I want to share some honest thoughts about my professional life. As many of you know, I work as an English Learning Manager at a major language academy in Busan.
If you think you know "competitive," wait until you see the South Korean education system. It’s absolutely intense. Families here often spend nearly $700 to $1,000 a month on English academies alone. It’s a massive investment, but it comes with a heavy cultural weight.
Why is Korea so obsessed with English? To understand this, you have to look at Korea's rapid economic growth. In a country with few natural resources, "Human Capital" was the only way to survive. For decades, a high score in English has been the "golden ticket" to prestigious universities and conglomerates like Samsung or Hyundai. English isn't just a language here; it’s a status symbol and a tool for social competition. Parents fear that if their child doesn't start early, they’ll be left behind in a fast-paced society.
Watching these children, my heart often aches. Kids naturally want to play and create, but the system focuses heavily on test scores, CSAT (Suneung), and rankings. It’s heartbreaking to see young talents confined to desks. While the younger generation dreams of becoming YouTubers or artists, the institutional pressure remains.
As someone working within this system, I try my best to focus on growth and breaking personal limits rather than just numbers. I believe that helping a child find confidence is more valuable than a perfect score. That’s the philosophy that keeps me going every day.
